Billy Earl Powell, 72, Cosby, TN (1944-2016)

He created wooden lamps for the retail industry around Pigeon Forge, Tn. and was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the United States Army. He was a native of Hegira, Cumberland County, KY and a resident of Cosby TN at the time of his death. He leaves many relatives in Metcalfe, Cumberland and other locations in Kentucky as well as Tennessee to carry on his legacy.

Billy Earl Powell, age 72 of Cosby, TN died October 11, 2016 at the Newport Medical Center in Newport, TN

Visitation will begin Thursday October 13, 2016 from 3pmCT until 7pmCT at the McMurtrey Funeral Home, 2232 Summer Shade Road, Summer Shade, KY, and October 14, 2016 from 9amCT until 1pmCT at the Rose of Sharon Church.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 14, 2016 at 1pmCT at the Rose of Sharon Church in Burkesville, KY with burial to follow in the Rose of Sharon Cemetery.



Billy Earl Powell, 72, Cosby, TN (1944-2016)


Born June 4, 1944 in Hegira, Cumberland County, KY, he was the son of the late Lucian and Opal Wray Powell and was the husband to Brenda Powell. He died Tuesday, October 11, 2016, in Newport, Cocke County, TN, at the age of 72 years, five months, and seven days.

He created wooden lamps for the retail industry around Pigeon Forge, TN, and was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the United States Army.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are:
  • One daughter: Sherry (Chris) Mooneyham of Edmonton, KY

  • One step daughter: Stacey Mooneyham

  • One son Billy Joe (BJ) Powell of Cosby, TN

  • A step son: Martin Mooneyham of Cosby, TN

  • Brothers: Jim Powell and wife Delcie of Burkesville, KY; and John Powell and wife Cheryl Denice of Albany, KY; and Larry (Porky) Powell and wife Judy of Beaumont, KY

  • Two grandchildren: Shana Jessie and Shane Davis/li>
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Ronnie Powell.
Memorials are encouraged to help with the funeral expenses and can be left at the funeral home.
