Ora Lee Jones, 97, Adair County, KY (1918-2016)

She was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church where she served as treasurer for 40 years. She was revered by generations of students as a great teacher. She was an educator for the Adair County School System for 45 years. She was the daughter of the late Samuel & Cordelia Hatfield Merritt and the widow of Furman Jones.

Ora Lee Jones, 97, of Columbia, died Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 5:30amCT at her home.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 11amCT at Tabernacle Christian Church, 3175 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Eldon Rucker & Bro. Raymond Martin officiating. Burial in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road. Visitation will be after 4:30pmCT, Monday, August 15, 2016, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, and after 9amCT, Tuesday at the church until the time of the service.

She was born August 27, 1918, in Adair County, KY. She was the daughter of the late Samuel & Cordelia Hatfield Merritt. She died Saturday, August 13, 2016, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 97 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Furman Jones; five brothers, Earl, Ray, Edwin, Bill, Charlie & Marvin Merritt; and two sisters, Martha Gentry & Mable Tarter.

She was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church where she served as treasurer for 40 years and an educator for the Adair County School System for 45 years.

Survivors Include:

  • Nieces and nephews: Freeda Hannah, Carol Edwards, Doug Merritt, Gary Merritt, Sam Merritt, Lila Simpson, Deanna Pierson, Pam Mallamo, Donnie Gentry, Jeanette Withers, Linda Gammage, Barbara Callahan, Trudy Harden and Maurita Herron

  • Special caregivers: Mary E. Grant, Susan Ashburn and Peggy Rich
Memorials are requested to be in the form of a donation to Tabernacle Christian Church. These may be left at the funeral home or at the church.
