CHS sophomore Samuel Kessler to attend GSA Outstanding sophomore is the son of Dr. Richie and Sonya Kessler. Mrs. Kessler is a computer science teacher at CHS. Dr. Kessler is a member of the faculty of Campbellsville University Click on headline for complete GSA story, on photo for link to Gatton Academy story By Calen McKinney Samuel Kessler is going to have a busy summer. Kessler, a sophomore at Campbellsville High School, has been accepted to participate in the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. The honor is in addition to him being accepted to attend Gatton Academy for his last two years of his high school career and the Rogers Scholars program this summer. More than 1,700 students applied to attend GSA, and 256 students were accepted. Kessler will attend GSA from June 19 to July 9, and participate in the instrumental music area. He is one of only 11 piano students in Kentucky to attend this year's GSA program. At GSA, Kentucky's finest young artists spend three weeks of incredibly intense and fun arts instruction. Students audition in nine disciplines, including architecture/design, creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, musical theatre, new media/still photography and film, visual art and vocal music. GSA participants live on a college campus during the program and have the opportunity to meet new friends, explore their creativity and discover who they are and who they can be in the future. Kessler has said he applied to GSA, Gatton Academy and Rogers Scholars in hopes of spending his summer having fun and learning. "It's probably the greatest educational opportunity within the state, I think," Kessler said about attending Gatton Academy. He is the first CHS student chosen to attend Gatton Academy, and the only from Taylor County to be part of the Class of 2018. Rogers Scholars is the Center for Rural Development's flagship youth program. It provides leadership and college scholarship opportunities to help upcoming high school juniors in southern and eastern Kentucky develop skills they need to seize their potential as the region's next generation of business and entrepreneurial leaders. "It's a good program with a good community service base," Kessler said about Rogers Scholars. "I really like how they focus on community building skills and leadership." Kessler said he is excited to attend GSA, and hoped he would get the opportunity to learn more about performing music. He is the son of Dr. Richie and Sonya Kessler.
