LWC softball takes 29th & 30th wins over Cumberland

COLUMBIA, KY - The eighth-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team extended their winning streak to 14 games as they swept Mid-South Conference foe, Cumberland (TN), on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, 10-2 and 8-0.



The Blue Raiders (30-10, 15-3 MSC) had a balanced attack at the plate in the two games as Abbi Goedde, Bailey Mize, Amanda McIver and Sydney Fourman each had three RBIs on the day. Fourman, Mize and Goedde also had home runs against the Phoenix (12-22, 8-10 MSC).

Game 1 - Lindsey Wilson 10, Cumberland 2

After Casey Bryan struck out the side to start the first inning, Lindsey Wilson scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Cassie Kooker reached on an infield single and Callum Pilgrim drove Kooker in with a double down the left field line. Fourman then followed with a home run to centerfield to put the Blue Raiders up 3-0.

Cumberland started the second inning with back-to-back singles and they both came around to score as the Phoenix cut their deficit to one run.

Lindsey Wilson was unable to score in the bottom of the second inning, but they came out strong in the third inning scoring seven runs in the home half of the third inning.

Pilgrim started the inning with a single up the middle and after a wild pitch she was able to move into scoring position. After Fourman was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base, Mize hit a three-run home run to left field to put the Blue Raiders up 6-2.

McIver was then hit by pitch and Amber Foukes hit a double to left-centerfield to put runner's two runners in scoring position with no outs in the third inning. Goedde delivered the second three-run home run in the inning for the Blue Raiders as she hit one out to right field.

With one out in the third inning, Jenna Firestein reached on an error and after a wild pitch and a single from Kooker, Firestein moved up to third base. Pilgrim drove in Firestein with a sacrifice fly to left field to give Lindsey Wilson a 10-2 lead.

Bryan was able to shut down the Phoenix in the fourth and fifth inning as she retired the side in order over the final two innings.

The Blue Raiders looked to increase their lead in the fourth inning, but they left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Bryan (13-6) pitched all five innings allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out seven batters without allowing a walk.

Game 2 - Lindsey Wilson 8, Cumberland 0

Lindsey Wilson had another strong in the second game of the doubleheader as they scored three runs in the home half of the first inning. Firestein led off the game with a walk and she later moved up to second base on passed ball. Firestein then moved to third base after a ground out and Fourman drove her in with a single.

A double from Mize put runners at second and third base with two outs in the inning. McIver then sent a single to out right field to score Fourman and Mize.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Blue Raiders were able to add three more runs to their lead. The first three batters of the inning were able to reach base for Lindsey Wilson, as Fourman led off the inning with a walk. Mize placed a single just past the Phoenix third basemen and a single through the left side of the infield from McIver was able to score Fourman.

After back-to-back outs, Morgan Howard hit a double to left-centerfield to score Mize from second base. Firestein increased the Lindsey Wilson with a single up the middle to score McIver and Howard looked to add on to the lead but she was tagged out at home.

The Blue Raiders tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to secure the victory. Foukes and Goedde started the inning with back-to-back singles. Howard then reached base on an error, which scored Foukes. After a walk from Firestein, Kooker delivered a single to score Mackenzie Jackson - who pinch ran for Howard - from third base.

Lindsey Wilson captured their 14th-straight victory with the 8-0 victory over Cumberland in the second half of the doubleheader.

Lyndsey Parden (16-3) pitched a complete-game shutout as she allowed just three hits over the five innings, while recording five strikeouts.

Next up for the Blue Raiders is a four-game series in Portsmouth, Ohio against Shawnee State on Friday and Saturday.
