Kelly Radford earns HS diploma at AC Adult Learning Center By Bethany Wilhelm Bonner Volunteer at Adult Education Center Kelly Radford is many things: wife, mother, minister for Carrying the Torch Ministries, AND a GED graduate. Kelly attended classes every week, Monday through Thursday, at the Adair County Adult Education Center (ACAEC). Though the road wasn't easy for her, Kelly said that her love for God and the Holy Spirit inspired her to finish her education. Kelly began her journey before the 2014 GED (R) Test change. Once the changes took effect, her previous passing scores were no longer valid causing her to start over. "I would get so frustrated," Kelly said of her educational struggles, "especially when I had to redo all of my subjects." Not wanting to give up, Kelly persevered and continued attending classes. A typical day at the center would start with her least favorite subject - MATH. Even though she had passed the other subjects, Kelly had to take the math test more than once. On a faithful day, Kelly took the math test one final time. She prayed in her car, "God, I need you to fight for me today." He answered her prayer and she passed. Second only to God, Kelly said the ACAEC made all the difference for her. She described the instructors as encouraging and compassionate, and stated that she enjoyed working in such a positive environment. Kelly recalls times in the center when the instructors would introduce new techniques and ideas to help her and other students remain focused and a void burnout. "It was a very positive atmosphere." Additionally, Kelly said that she really enjoyed working with other students. She remembered an instance in which she had become very discouraged, when she heard the wise and encouraging words of a fellow student, "You have to learn to love the things you hate." Kelly also passed on encouraging advice to other students. After a fellow student passed the test, she credited Kelly for her success. Now that she has her GED, Kelly wishes to continue encouraging others through her writing, which is one of her great passions. She also plans to spend more time with her sons and instill her commitment for education and determination in them. "Ask anyone who knows me, (and) they'll tell you I'm not a quitter." It was this tenacious mindset, encouraging attitude and unceasing faith in God that brought Kelly a step further in her journey. Kelly encourages anyone who is hesitant to start working toward their GED to take that step. Instructors are waiting to help you start the path to fulfill your dreams.
