Rev. Gilbert L. Harmon, 87, Adair Co., KY (1928-2015)

He was the leader of a large family which has contributed so much to Adair County. He was the son of the late John & Emma Streeval Harmon, and the widower of Bessie Estes Harmon. He leaves 42 direct living descendants. He was a member of Columbia Baptist Church, an ordained Baptist Minister, having pastored several churches in the area. He was a former member of the Columbia-Adair County Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as President for many years. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a life member of VFW Post 6097, a member of Columbia Lodge #96. He was employed by Grissom-Maupin-Heskamp Funeral Home for many years and served as Deputy Coroner under the late David Heskamp and Deputy Jailer under the late Lawrence Burton.

Funeral services will be at 10amCT, Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Dr. James Jones officiating Burial in Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY. Visitation after 4pmCT, Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Casket Bearers: James Green, Bobby Beard, Frank Burke, Mike Clements, Robbie Harmon, Howard Robertson, and Kevin Eberhardt



Rev. Gilbert L. Harmon, 87, Adair Co., KY (1928-2015)

He was born Friday, March 9, 1928, in Adair County, KY. He was the son of the late John & Emma Streeval Harmon. He died Sunday, March 15, 2015, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 87 years and six days.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Estes Harmon on October 8, 2011; two grandchildren, three brothers and four sisters.

He was a member of Columbia Baptist Church, an ordained Baptist Minister, having pastored several churches in the area. He was a former member of the Columbia-Adair County Volunteer Fire Department where he served as President for many years. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a life member of VFW Post 6097, a member of Columbia Lodge #96. He was employed by Grissom-Maupin-Heskamp Funeral Home for many years and served as Deputy Coroner under the late David Heskamp and Deputy Jailer under the late Lawrence Burton.

Survivors include:
  • Two sons: Robert (Sharon) Harmon, Johnny (Gina) Harmon all of Columbia, KY

  • Four daughters: Mary (Howard) Robertson of Center, KY; Linda (Kevin) Eberhardt of Cincinnati, Ohio: Darlene (Frank) Burke, Ruth Ann (Mike) Clements all of Columbia. KY

  • Three sisters: Pauline McCutchen of Dixon, TN; Bertha Hiser of Summershade, KY; and Shirley Farris of Bowling Green, KY

  • Eleven grandchildren

  • Twenty-five great-grandchildren

  • One great-great grandchild

  • Several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
At Gilbert's request, in place of flowers, please donate to either the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan or the WHAS Crusade for Children. These can be left at the funeral home.
