Road Conditions - 11am Update - KYTC District 4

By: Chris Jessie

With so much concentration on I-65, other roads in the district are also being cleared. As sun heats and melts this morning, compacted snow is very slick - similar to holding a wet ice cube. This is true on many main/primary routes. These routes are topped with 1-2" of ice as a result of compaction on Thursday. Refreezing overnight has created a reverse condition where plowed secondary roads (which were not as compacted) cleared more easily overnight and are in better shape than some primary roads. Plows can get a better "bite" on less compacted pavement.

This applies to all 11 counties in District 4. In all cases, motorists should slow down. Driving too fast for conditions can be linked as a contributing factor in most of the incidents through the district over the last 48 hours.

Today, with applications of heavy salt and calcium chloride, we plan to get down to pavement on nearly all routes.
