Chris Bennett: Life in Long Hunters, Adair County, USA March 5, 2015 By Chris Bennett Ed, I wanted to tell you about this new snow shovel I bought at Jeffries Hardware yesterday. It is the best dang snow shovel that I have ever had the displeasure of using; although shoveling snow is never really fun, this Super shovel makes it easy. This snow is different from the other, its kinda heavy on the bottom and more powdery on top. On Butler street the snow has drifted much more than our last snow, I measured it in several places. It measured as much as 10" and as little as 3" so I guess we got 4 or 5 inches of snow here? It's hard to judge. During our last blizzard, I broke my old snow shovel. Luckily, I had not used it much in the last few years, so I was happy when the truck delivered more snow shovels yesterday. Laura and David told me it was a "good one." Honestly, I had my doubts. After all, it was plastic and fiberglass. A good shovel otta be made out of hickory and steel. Like Clint Eastwood said in Pale Rider, "There's nothing like a nice piece of hickory." I really should not have doubted the Jeffries employees, because that Brian Rich runs a tight ship up there. I am sure he has no choice, as his father Mr. Stanley Rich, works next door at the Show Case Gallery and would straighten him out if he sold me a junky shovel. I guess the provocative question is why would anyone want to get out and shovel snow when its gonna be 60 degrees Saturday or write a story about a snow shovel. Like most folks around here, work has been slow because of the economy and weather, therefore I am bored. A feller can only watch so much Netflix and read so many books before he wants to get out and shovel some snow! Moreover, I have taken the death of Spock very hard this week and I have been binge watching Star Trek ever since. I cant believe that Shatner didn't even go to Spock's funeral!!!! Every one that reads this should go up to Jeffries and get em one of these magic shovels, when Jeffries get some more in. Hopefully we wont use them again for 15-20 years but you never know, March in Kentucky is a crazy weather month. This story was posted on 2015-03-05 14:51:04
