He was a retired veteran, and will be accorded full military honors. He was the son of the late William Porter Smith and Nancy Elvira England Smith. His wife, Gladys Brown Smith, survives. He leaves 28 direct and one step living descendants.

James Garnett Smith, age 89 of Edmonton, KY, died Monday February 9, 2015 at his home.

Funeral services will be 2pmCT, Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Butler Funeral Home, 201 East Street, Edmonton, KY, with Burial in Metcalfe County Memorial Gardens, Edmonton, KY, with military honors. Visitation was from 4pmCT until 8pmCT, Wednesday, February 11, 2015.



He was the son of the late William Porter Smith and Nancy Elvira England Smith.

He is survived by his wife Gladys Brown Smith of Edmonton, KY, and the following:
  • Two sons: James Howard Smith of Edmonton, KY; and Darrell Smith of Tennessee

  • A step son: Michael Heath of Illinois

  • Four daughters: Jenny Powell of Virginia, Brenda Rolin of Tennessee, Teresa Roberts on of Kentucky, and Marie Johnson of Tennessee

  • Brothers: Maxie Smith of Burksville, Kentucky; and George Smith of Indiana

  • Three sisters: Ollie Mitchell of Indiana, Irene Allen of Kentucky, and Sue Vibbert of Indiana.

  • Twelve grandchildren

  • Ten great grandchildren
James was a retired army veteran.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers Walter and Paul Smith; two sisters, Louvinia Garrett and Nell Rittenberry. Butler Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
