Pat Darnell--or "Miss Pat" as the children know her--works at Adair County Primary Center. She does many things throughout the school day, but one of the most important things she does is SMILE. She's a natural. She conveys genuine goodwill with her kind, sparkling eyes and sweet, warm smile.

A smile seems like a simple thing. It requires little effort--just a few facial muscles are involved. It costs absolutely nothing. And it takes no time. You can meet a person and smile without ever breaking stride.

A smile is uplifting. It can silently say "Hello", "Have a good day", "I wish you well", or "Your are important:" A smile softens the sharp edges of someone's day.

As simple and rewarding as a smile is, you might assume they would be everywhere. But as we often hurry through our day, we just forget. The opportunity to create sunshine is lost in seconds. But "Miss Pat" inspires me.

This past Friday morning, as those big fluffy snowflakes floated down to earth, she was in front of the school helping students get safely in the building. As my grandson alighted, she said, "Hello, Connor. And how are you this beautiful, sunny morning?" And then she smiled.

What a great way to start the day!
