Hunter Durham: A lesson in gun safety for a lifetime

Hunter Durham relates a hard learned lesson on gun safety a the hand of Otley Gilpin. It was a lesson he's never forgotten, in his hunting career, in the decades since.
Response to A Christmas Rifle Story: The day the Devil won out, a little while

By Hunter Durham

I spent many days and even weeks from the time I was 8 until I got out of high school at the home of Lawrence & Ella Gilpin.. They had all kinds of guns, bullets, shells and ect in the hallway.

The best lesson I recieved was when I only had a BB gun. I went hunting with Otley Gilpin, their son, and a master of gunmanship. We had hunted during the day and killed some squirrels and were coming back to the house when all of a sudden, Otley slapped me acros the jaw and knocked me down on the ground.

I was terrified that he would do that since he was a person I really respected. He said "Don't ever come within 50 yards of a house with a loaded gun. You have not unloaded you BB gun."

  • Wow, what a lesson. After unloading my BB gun. He patted me on the head and I never in all hunting days came within 50 yards of any home with a loaded gun.

Thanks, Mr. Rice, for your story. - HUNTER
