Amy Pike: Regardless of who is elected, tax won't be repealed Personal opinion of the writer See response by Billy Joe Fudge: Mayoral leadership, vote of people, could stop Payroll Tax Amy Pike writes The election is tomorrow and everyone is still abuzz about the recent tax that was passed by the City Council. This election has NOTHING to do with that tax and unless an entirely new council is seated, the tax is not going to be repealed. This is impossible considering that six of the eight candidates that are running for City Council were the ones who voted to approve the tax. It has been stated that Ms. Waggener voted in opposition of the tax, which is correct; however, is it not also correct that she made a motion to change the way the funds were allotted in the tax proposal prior to voting in opposition of it? The Adair Progress's minutes from the meeting state "Before the vote, Waggener moved that the restrictions on funds from the tax, which earmark the money for Parks and Recreation, economic development, the General Fund, and the Rainy Day fund, be removed, so all the money would be put into the General Fund". If her motion to change the way the funds were allocated had passed, then would she also have voted to approve it and if not, why would the motion have been made to begin with? Taylor Co has a payroll tax for their city and county as does Russell Co. Many people, including myself, who travel elsewhere to work, pay this tax. It is necessary for the progression of our city. Regardless of who you chose to vote for in the Mayor race, the tax was NOT approved and implemented solely by the Mayor and it will not be retracted solely by the Mayor. I urge everyone to look at the background of the candidates, what they stand for, and who will help move our city forward in the next four years when deciding who deserves your vote. This tax should not be a factor at this point. Sincerely, - Amy Pike This story was posted on 2014-11-03 18:55:58
