FRANKFORT, KY (Oct. 29, 2014) -- The Kentucky State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) has awarded Russell Harris a 2014 Kentucky Archives Month Certificate of Merit for "Notable Service to and Advocacy for Archives in Kentucky" by a public official. Harris is former senior associate editor of the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society. SHRAB will present the award to Harris at the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS), 100 W Broadway, Frankfort, at 8amCT/9amET, Friday, 31 Oct 2014, one of the final events celebrating Kentucky Archives Month.

The award honors Harris' 37-year career in which he "worked diligently to nurture and advance historical scholarship in the state and throughout the South." It also credits him with developing an exemplary and comprehensive knowledge of archival collections across Kentucky. Harris retired from KHS in August 2013.

Darrell Meadows, KHS's director of research and interpretation, and Tony Curtis, assistant editor of the Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition, nominated Harris for the award, which was endorsed by KHS executive director Kent Whitworth and assistant director Scott Alvey.
