Ruth Smith, 90, Adair Co., KY (1923-2014)

She was the matriarch of a very large, respected Northwest Adair County, KY, family. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Frank & Myrtie Hunter Pyles, and the widow of James Robert Smith. She leaves 50 direct living descendants. She attended Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

Ruth Smith, 90, of the Portland Community of Adair County, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 7:23amET at Taylor County Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be after 4pmCT, Saturday, September 27, 2014. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at 1:30pmCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Herbert Janes and Bro. Cary Dunbar officiating. Burial will be in Tarter's Chapel Cemetery, 4350 Milltown Road, Columbia, KY.

She was born December 1, 1923, in Adair County, KY. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Frank & Myrtie Hunter Pyles. She died Wednesday, September 24, 2014, in Campbellsville, Taylor County, KY, at the age of 90 years, nine months, and 23 days.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Smith on October 23, 1977; a daughter, Dianne Smith; two brothers, Ted & Grady Pyles; a sister, Gen Baker; and two great-grandchildren, Gabby & Abbey Burton.

She attended Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include:
  • Four sons: James "Jiggs" (Lelia), Barry (Minnie), Colby (Connie) & Jerry (Sandy) Smith all of Columbia, KY

  • One daughter: Pam (Kenny) Montgomery of Columbia, KY

  • Fifteen grandchildren

  • Twenty-nine great-grandchildren

  • One Great-Great-Grandchild
Expressions of sympathy are requested to be in the form of a donation to Tarter's Chapel Cemetery Fund. These may be left at the funeral home.
