James Memory Coats, Sr., Green County, KY (1938-2014)

James Memory "Mem" Coats, Sr. was the owner and operator of Coats Fun Center in Sulphur Well for many years. He and his wife Sue raised their family there. Mem graduated from Metcalfe County High School in 1958, a member of the first "Metcalfe County High School" graduating class. Mem and his wife Sue moved to Green County in the Exie community a few years ago, but Mem continued to visit in the Sulphur Well community often. He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Union Chapel Baptist Church.

Mr. James Memory Coats, Sr. of Green County, Kentucky, departed this life on Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Jane Todd Crawford Hospital in Greensburg.

Graveside services were held at 3pmCT, Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Hiseville Cemetery in Barren County, Kentucky. Bro. James T. Jeffries will be officiating.



Pallbearers: Adam Jessie, Anthony Young, Jeff Hupp, Corey Jackson, Travis Dowell,, Justin Goff, and Shyler Kjelsen.

Honorary pallbearers: Roger Dale Bryant, Robert Coats, Mitchell Bunch, Joe Hickerson, Johnny Bagby, Tony Compton, Ray Compton, Gary Compton, Tommy and Rita Smith.

James Memory Coats, Sr., Metcalfe County, KY (1938-2014)


Mr. James Memory Coats, Sr. of Green County, Kentucky, son of Helen Riley Coats of Ohio and the late James Lawrence Coats, was born on Sunday, November 27, 1938 in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, and departed this life on Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Jane Todd Crawford Hospital. He was 75 years, 4 months, and 11 days of age.

He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Union Chapel Baptist Church. He was also a restaurant owner and a oil businessman.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha Sue Glass Coats, having united in marriage on July 9, 1958 and the following:
  • Three daughters and a son: Monika Joy Coats of Edmonton, KY; Desiree G. Hupp of Ohio; James Memory Coats, Jr. and his wife Amanda of Glasgow, KY; and Marnie Heather Young of Edmonton, KY

  • Twelve grandchildren and their spouses: Torie and Johnny Hatton of Glasgow, Ky; Kishma and Jason James, Natasha Hupp, Crimson Hupp, Stasha and Travis Dowell all of Ohio; Savannah and Bryan Smith, Shyler Kjelsen of Edmonton, KY; Allie Young, Acea Young, Maly Young, Ashton Young all of Knob Lick, KY; and Katosha and Adam Jessie of Glasgow, KY

  • Eight grandchildren

  • Two sisters: Carol Coats Goff and Patty Louise Coats Jackson both of Ohio

  • And a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the "On Wings of Eagles" Foundation, which can be made to the funeral home.
