Audrey Ellen Calhoun, Adair County, KY (1929-2014)

She was a native of and grew up in Adair County, Kentucky and was a resident of Henry County, IN, at the time of her death. She was a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College, and Western Kentucky University and has had a long career in education, teaching in Allen County, KY, and Mt. Summit, IN, and New Castle IN. She was a devout and devoted member of the 14th Street Church of Christ and Bible Study Fellowship. She was a member of a highly regarded Adair County family, the daughter of the late Robert and Alta (Price) Akin. She was the widow of the late William Calhoun. She leaves 7 direct living descendants and many relatives in Adair and elsewhere in Kentucky, as well as in Indiana

Audrey Ellen Calhoun, age 84 passed away unexpectedly at home in New Castle, IN, Sunday, March 30, 2014. Funeral services will be at 11amCT, Saturday, April 5, 2014, with visitation one hour prior at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY (MAP). Burial will follow in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. (MAP)



Audrey Ellen Calhoun, Adair County, KY (1929-2014)


She was born September 12, 1929 in Argo, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Alta (Price) Akin of Adair County, KY. She died in New Castle, Henry County, IN, on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 18 days.

The eldest of ten children, she grew up on farms in Adair County, Kentucky. She was a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky and Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She received a Masters degree from Ball State University and taught elementary school for 37 years at Scottsville, Kentucky, Mt. Summit, Indiana and Hernly and Parker schools in New Castle. Audrey believed in education.

She attended 14th Street Church of Christ and Bible Study Fellowship where she greatly enjoyed the solid Biblical teaching and uplifting fellowship. A wonderful mother and a lovely and gracious person, she blessed her family and friends with her kindness, sweetness and generous nature. Her determination, ambition, remarkable managerial ability, strength of character and dignity carried her through life. Audrey was greatly beloved and will be sorely missed by those who love her.

Survivors include the following:
  • Her children: Greg Calhoun (Kathy Sorrell) of New Castle, IN; and Kibby Calhoun of New Castle, IN

  • Grandchildren: Patricia (Josh) Gilbert, Christina Calhoun (companion, Ben Hoffmeyer) and Douglas Calhoun

  • Great grandchildren: Mary Ellen Burns-Gilbert and Benjamin Gilbert

  • Sisters: Flossie Price, Charlene Sexton and Margie Williams all of Columbia, KY; Sheila McQueary of Lousiville, KY

  • Brothers: Finley Akin of Columbia, KY; Dean Akin of Versailles, KY; and Dickie Akin of Chicago, IL

  • Several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Calhoun; sister, Genois Collins; brother, Bobby Akin.
