Maerene Shirley, Adair County, KY (1932-2014)

She was the matriarch of a highly regarded Adair County, KY family. She was a native of the East Fork Community of Metcalfe County, KY, and a resident of Adair County at the time of her death. She was the widow of Evan Shirley who died in 1989. A son, Udell Shirley, died three days prior to the death of Mrs. Shirley. She leaves four direct living descendants. Mrs. Shirley was a member of the Lighthouse Tabernacle in Knifley, KY and retired from Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville, KY.

Maerene Shirley, age 82 years, of Columbia, KY passed away suddenly Monday, March 24, 2014 at 5:30 A.M. at the Westlake Regional Hospital Emergency Room in Columbia, KY.

Funeral service, Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 11amCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY. Clergy officiating will be Bro. Bill Warren & Bro. Ralph Foster. Interment in the Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. The family requests visitation after 4pmCT, on Friday, March 28, 201 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.



Maerene Shirley, Adair County, KY (1932-2014)


She was born Monday, February 8, 1932 in the East Fork Community of Metcalfe Co., Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Elbert and Ethel Parsons Brock. She died Monday, March 24, 2014, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 82 years, 1 month, and 16 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband Evan Shirley in 1989 and by a son Udell Shirley Friday, March 21, 2014 and by the following siblings: Clarence Brock, Lawrence Brock, James Brock, Russell Brock, Annie Elmore and Hattie Moore.

She is survived by the following:
  • One son: Donnie Shirley and wife Phyllis of Columbia, KY

  • A daughter in law: Norma Jean Shirley of Columbia, KY

  • Three grandchildren: Shawn Shirley, Michelle Larimore and Eric Shirley

  • Four brothers: Gilbert Brock of Columbia, KY; Lester Brock of Columbia, KY: Arvis Brock of Mt. Washington, KY; and Eugene Brock of Shepherdsville, KY
  • Two sisters: Juanita Day of Columbia, KY and Wanda Holmes of Columbia, KY

  • Several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends survive
Mrs. Shirley was a member of the Lighthouse Tabernacle in Knifley, KY and retired from Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville, KY.
