Sophia E Wheelock, Adair County, KY (1934-2014)

She was was a native of Adair County, the daughter of Nola and Robert Elmer Loy of Fairplay, KY. Sophia had a love of education and, once her children were grown, entered Washtenaw Community College and went on to Eastern Michigan University where she earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1988 at the age of 54. Sophia worked as a playground supervisor for the Saline School District and also volunteered as a reading tutor in the schools. Sophia was a published poet and wrote a column for The Saline Reporter. Sophia belonged to a peace group, an issue she was passionate about. Sophia and Warren enjoyed nature, gardening, and volunteering. Sophia and Warren were members of the Friends of the Library committee that worked to build a new Ypsilanti District library.

Sophia Alberta Loy Wheelock, 79, died peacefully at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, Indiana on February 9 after a lengthy illness. A formal viewing will be held at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 South 2nd Street, Chesterton, IN at 4pmCT, Thursday, February 13 with a service to follow at 5pmCT. Interment will be at The Loy Family Cemetery, 519 Loy Cemetery Road, Columbia KY, in Adair County, Kentucky in the spring.



Sophia E Wheelock, Adair County, KY (1934-2014


Sophia, daughter of Nola and Robert Elmer Loy, was born on July 7, 1934 in Fairplay, Adair County, Kentucky. Sophia moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1951 where she met Warren Wheelock. They married on December 9, 1952.

Sophia had a love of education and, once her children were grown, entered Washtenaw Community College and went on to Eastern Michigan University where she earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1988 at the age of 54.

Warren and Sophia made their home in Ypsilanti for fifteen years, moving to Saline, Michigan, in 1968 where they lived until Warren retired, when they returned to Ypsilanti.

Sophia worked as a playground supervisor for the Saline School District and also volunteered as a reading tutor in the schools. Sophia was a published poet and wrote a column for The Saline Reporter. Sophia belonged to a peace group, an issue she was passionate about. Sophia and Warren enjoyed nature, gardening, and volunteering. Sophia and Warren were members of the Friends of the Library committee that worked to build a new Ypsilanti District library.

Beloved wife of Warren (81), Sophia is survived by children, Angela (Pat), Pam (Greg), Val Duva, and David (Carol); grandchildren, Nancy and Brendan (Angela), Chris, Michael, and Alex (Val), Lindsey, Elizabeth, Julianne, Richard, Jimmy, Hope, and Andrew (David) and siblings Eve Churchill, Joe Loy, David Loy (Linda), and Sam Loy (Geneva). Sophia was predeceased by siblings: Dellous Loy (Enola), Kathleen Buchanan, (Larry), Wesley Loy (Kathryn), Robert Loy, Jr., Vickie Green (Buddy), Clifton Loy, and Johnny Loy. Sophia will be deeply missed by family and friends.
