By Vonnie Kolbenschlag
News from the Columbia Woman's Club

Columbia Woman's Club members are most appreciative of the kindness and community spirit of home owners who graciously open their homes for the clubs annual home tour. This year the tour is Sunday, December 8, 1pm-4:30pmCT. Money received goes toward a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior woman to attend Lindsey Wilson College and for other community projects. Tickets are available at the chamber office - 384 6020 - and from club members for $5.00. Tickets will cost $7.00 if bought at the homes on the day of the tour.

We thank the Praise Assembly Church for allowing parking for the Della Shaw house on Jamestown Street. Notice the church's new enhanced exterior - a plus for our neighborhood.

Chuck Rogers Home - 202 South High Street, Columbia, KY (Google MAP)

This house, owned by Chuck Rogers who completely renovated it in 1995, has served as home for many families since before the Civil War. As you tour this home you will see art of all sorts - especially wonderful paintings, sculptures and furnishings. There are Christmas trees with unique ornaments Chuck has collected when traveling - one features ornaments (toys) that were favorites of Chuck's Dad, the late Tommy Rogers. Furnishings and furniture keep family memories, as well as preserve heritage of the past. Ascend and marvel at the staircase built of chestnut wood. Here, one of the four bedrooms features the brass bed in which Alta Barbee Garnett was born over one hundred years ago.

Music from the 1895 rosewood concert grand piano played by talented Bobby Lee will make your visit really special.

Chuck says he is blessed by the grace of God and owes all to the hard work and sacrifice of his parents and family.

When you visit, you will be given a list of unique items, too many to mention here, to look for as you tour through this home.

Mike and Thelma Robertson Home - 105 Mason Lane, Columbia, KY (Google Map))

The home of Mike and Thelma Robertson is a 30 year old restored ranch house that has been totally refurbished and redecorated by the owners. It is a lovely blend of modern and rustic decor which is noted by the unique use of barn wood for accent touches throughout the house and a replica of a barn door between the office and the laundry room. The kitchen is new, totally efficient and beautifully decorated. Many antique pieces are throughout the home and blend in beautifully with the modern styles of furnishings. The lower level is finished for a recreation room with a sleeping area and is decorated in a rustic western theme. It opens to a beautiful pool area in the rear. This home has many interesting appointments and is a must see for the Home Tour.

Della Shaw Home 304 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY (Google Map)

The Shaw home is a Craftsman Style built in 1923 by Mary Ritchie and John Lee Walker. It has been tastefully restored and updated. Each of the rooms has unique features of the 1920s, including 10 and 12 foot high ceilings with crown molding, hardwood floors, fireplaces, original decorative glass paneled windows and pocket doors between the living and dining rooms. Also several of the interior doors have transoms. Of particular interest is the cozy nook off the kitchen that is ideal for resting and TV watching.

A walk through this home will certainly bring to mind feelings of nostalgia for the early 20th century. It is beautifully decorated for the holiday season.

Magnolia House Bed and Breakfast Linda and Carson Lewis 307 Merchant Street, Columbia, KY (Google MAP)

The Jones family bought this lot from the town of Columbia in 1898. They built a house and in 1912 the house and lot were sold to H.A. Walker, Successive owners were Richardson, Harper, Jeffries, Phelps, Wethington, Tucker and Goodin until 2004 when Carson and Linda bought the house. They began the year long process of renovating both house and grounds into a bed and breakfast. In 2005 they had their first guests. Since then guests from many states and several countries have enjoyed staying in the Magnolia House in a choice of three comfortable decorated bedrooms.

This Farmhouse Style house is a popular simple style found throughout the mid-Atlantic and southern United States having gables at the front and side. It is two stories tall with a similar floor plan upstairs and downstairs.

Columbia Woman's Club members invite you to pause here for their holiday refreshments when touring Magnolia House hosted by Linda and Carson Lewis.

David Waltz' Heart's Image Pottery and Sculpture Studio 980 G Taylor Road (turn off Hwy 61 at the five mile marker), in the Village of Gradyville, KY (Google Map)

The Columbia Woman's Club supports local arts and brings recognition this year to a place that displays for sale one of a kind ceramic sculptures as well as pottery for everyday use. Drop by to purchase or just view what David can make with various clays. Other artists will also be present with their art available for purchase. Buying for oneself or for a gift that comes from a local artist makes the gift more meaningful. This stop requires no ticket and David will have refreshments to enjoy while getting to know some of our artists and their work. - GEORGE KOLBENSCHLAG
