Margaret Clayton, 103, Adair County, KY (1909-2013) She was a member of a highly distinguished Adair County, KY, family. She was the daughter of the late James P. and Margart Jones Clayton. She was an extrordinarily accomplished woman, highly honored during her 44 years in the field of education. Since retirement, Miss Clayton was active in groups interested in significant societal issues. Funeral service will be Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 1pmCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Raymond Martin officiating. Burial will be in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 10amCT, Saturday. Casket Bearers: Wesley Jones, Richard Royse, Glen Vance, Mike Vance, Wesley Royse, and George Atwood. Margaret Clayton, Adair County, KY (1909-2013) She was born November 28, 1909, in Adair County, KY. She was the daughter of the late James P. and Margaret Jones Clayton. She died Monday, November 4, 2013, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at th age of 103 years, 11 months, and 6 days. She was a public school educator for 44 years, having taught in a Green County one-room school and at Greensburg High School. In 1946, she went to Jefferson County, KY to teach at Valley High School. After nine years, she became an instructional supervisor at Jefferson County Board of Education, serving in that position for twenty-one years. She received her education at Lindsey Wilson Jr. College (now a four-year college), University of Kentucky, AB, University of Louisville, MA and an academic year post graduate study in Humanities at Yale University. Miss Clayton was active in professional organizations serving as President of the Department of Classroom Teachers of the Kentucky Education Association, President of the Association of Educational Supervisors, President of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary inter-national society for women educators. Also, as Vice-President of the Kentucky Association of Colleges, Elementary and Secondary Schools and Vice-President of the Kentucky Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She served a term on the Board of Directors of the Joint Council on Economic Education, New York, a national coordinating agency to promote the teaching of economic concepts at all grade levels. She helped organize the Kentucky Council of Economic Education. During the summer months, she conducted workshops at the University of Kentucky, Tulane University and taught summer school classes at Indiana University and the University of Louisville. Since retirement, Miss Clayton was active in groups interested in significant societal issues - the Board of Directors of the Kentucky Association for Older Persons, which worked for the passage of the nursing home reform law, the Commission of 100 Senior Citizens of the Legislative Research Commission and served on the Health and Insurance Committee of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association. She was an advocate for women's and children's rights as supported by the American Association of University Women. She is survived by three nephews and one niece; Charles Vance, P.T. Vance, Richard Royse & Margaret Bailey, a special great-niece, Jan Atwood, along with several other great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives. Memorials are suggested to either the Margaret E. Clayton Endowment Fund at Lindsey Wilson College or the Columbia Christian Church. These may be left at the funeral home.
