Robbie Harmon, Adair DPP, reports good enrollment figures

Total enrollment this year is 2,684, up from 2,543 at a comparable time one year ago, the Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP) says, but cautions that final figures for this year have some settling to do. Still, at this time the numbers give reason for optimism

Preliminary figures for enrollment in Adair County Schools are very encouraging, according to figures obtained from Director of Pupil Personnel Robbie Harmon.

Total enrollment this year is 2,684, up from 2,543 at a comparable time one year ago.

Preliminary 2013 enrollment figures for the four Adair County Schools are:
  • Adair County High School - 779
  • Adair County Primary Center - 657
  • Adair County Elementary School - 638
  • Adair County Middle School - 610
  • TOTAL ENROLLMENT - 2684
Last year, with a different configuration, there were 759 in Adair County High School, 601 at Adair County Elementary, 415 at Colonel William Casey Elementary School, 401 at Adair County Middle School, and 267 at John Adair Intermediate School for a total at the main campus of 2,543.

However, Harmon says it will take a few days, maybe weeks before any significance can be read into it. "There are always a number who register but don't show up at all," he said. "And there are usually a smaller number who register late."

A significant component of the late registrants - students whose families have moved here from northern areas - may have gotten the word that school starts earlier in Kentucky than in the areas from which they moved. In the past, he said, those move-ins seemed to assume a later start, and there was a bump from that.

Adair County Middle School, the oldest facility on the new campus and the school with the lowest enrollment, had one grade with largest increase in enrollment, the sixth grade, according to Superintendent Alan W. Reed, but specific numbers were not given.

Superintendent Reed said that any increase in enrollment is important, especially in terms of balancing the budget. Increased state aid alone, he said, is over $3,500 per student.
