"This is a wonderful opportunity for Kentucky citizens to learn how to protect themselves in these tumultuous economic times," said Charles Vice, commissioner for the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). "I encourage seniors to take advantage of this free and unbiased information to help guard against financial fraud."

AARP research shows that baby boomers and senior citizens are natural targets for a wide range of unscrupulous practices because they have established savings, good credit and money to invest. The Senior Scam Jam workshop is designed to raise awareness about the techniques con artists use, so seniors can recognize the tactics and protect themselves from fraud.

This free public program is brought to the Campbellsville area by DFI and its partners, including the Taylor County Extension Service. The workshop sessions will be conducted by DFI, the Kentucky AARP, the Kentucky Attorney General's Office, the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Better Business Bureau. These agencies will provide information on avoiding fraud and protecting seniors and their finances, including contact information of who to call for help.

Before investing, check with DFI, Kentucky's state securities regulator, to verify if the investment opportunity is registered and if the seller is licensed. Call 800-223-2579 or visit http://kfi.ky.gov/public/Pages/invest.aspx.

DFI, http://kfi.ky.gov, is an agency in the Public Protection Cabinet. For more than 100 years it has supervised the financial services industry by examining, chartering, licensing and registering various financial institutions, securities firms and professionals operating in Kentucky. DFI's mission is to serve Kentucky residents and protect their financial interests by maintaining a stable financial industry, continuing effective and efficient regulatory oversight, promoting consumer confidence, and encouraging economic opportunities.
