By Ed Waggener

Sometimes, actually most of the time, visits to Downtown Columbia on "regular" days finds a previously unannounced vignette, a short skit, a mini-show or a brief encounter with someone you know from the recent or distant paste which, in itself, makes the whole trip worth the effort.

A pleasant after breakfast entertainment on a recent Sunday morning was a visit with one of Adair County's great entrepreneurs, Marvin Gentry the auto parts rebuilder and now, the owner of M.G. Transportation, a trucking company operating from Ella, with routes from Florida to Pennsylvania to Arizona.

\ He was driving his 1976 Dodge Charger, a vehicle he bought some 12 years ago in Tennessee. He had time to tell just a bit of its story, covered mostly in the accompanying photo album.

The nutshell history was that he had been able to buy a car a doting father had given to his son for the son's transportation while attending a Tennessee college. The son had driven it less than 50,000 miles before it was no longer his primary ride. Mr. Gentry bought in 2001, took his time restoring it, and now has a vehicle he thoroughly enjoys driving, and which draws attention everywhere he takes it.

On a Sunday morning, that story was a pleasant part of the perpetual performances of the passing parade which makes Downtown Columbia such a pleasant place in which to play a part. - EW
