Cowbird inhabiting Halsey barns are attentive parents Even build their own nests. They're big. Infants seem to be about the same size as little chickens, writer says. By Jon Halsey I had always heard the same tale re: the Cowbird "never raising it's own young but lays its eggs in the nest of other birds" and I have seen the same behavior. However, for the past three years I have had a small flock of Brown Headed Cowbirds nesting and raising their brood in the Southwest eave of my barn. I've tried closing the access but they still manage to get in the same spot every year. They also nest just inside the roof vent of the same barn. They appear to be as attentive as any other bird species, carrying in a never ending supply of food. Most everyone has noticed how large the Cowbird eggs are. If you ever see a young, still un-feathered infant they seem as large as young un-feathered chickens.
