LWC Bonners Scholars program honored by Forward in the Fifth Bonners stepped in when Federal Funding was reduced, helping Camp Casey with what translated into $47,000 worth of Service Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - A Lindsey Wilson College organization was recently lauded for its efforts to support education in Adair County. The LWC Bonner Scholars Program received an AppLE Award from Forward in the Fifth for work that improved education through engagement in service-learning. The LWC Bonner Scholars Program specifically received an AppLE Award - which stands for Appalachian Leaders in Education - for the program's partnership with Camp Casey, an after-school program at Colonel William Casey Elementary School. During the 2012-13 school year, a total of LWC 32 Bonner Scholars assisted and led more than 35 activities at the after-school program. This school year, Camp Casey served more than 360 students from preschool through second grade. Camp Casey began as a federally sponsored program, but when funding was reduced in 2009, the LWC Bonner Scholars Program stepped in and provided volunteer services needed to keep it running. This year, that translated into more than $47,000 worth of service. "The work of this group has helped transform personal, school and campus culture and demonstrate what true service is all about," said Dana Harmon, Adair County Schools 21st Century director. "I cannot imagine our program without these (Lindsey Wilson) students involved in it. ... I've never experienced a more dependable or valuable partnership. Words will never adequately express the gratitude we feel toward this group of great student individuals and the institutions that support them." Created in partnership with the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J., the LWC Bonner Scholars Program aims to transform the lives of students and members, the life of their campuses, their local communities and the world through service and leadership. During the 2012-13 school year, LWC Bonner Scholars donated more than 29,000 hours of community service to 15 non-profit groups in the region. The LWC Bonner Scholars Program was one of 10 organizations and individuals from Southern and Eastern Kentucky to receive an AppLE Award this year from Forward in the Fifth. The awards were presented at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset, KY, home of Forward in the Fifth. The awards highlight "the immense talent and desire of adults and students alike found within our region," Jim Tackett, Forward in the Fifth executive director. "It is with this passion and attitude that we will transform Southern and Eastern Kentucky into more educational excellence." The AppLE Awards were started in 2012 by Forward in the Fifth to celebrate excellence in education by recognizing individuals who work to accomplish the nonprofit organization's mission of increasing the region's educational attainment levels.
