The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same

The first Farmer's Market on the Square will be 8am-12pm noon CT, Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY

By Barbara Armitage

I'm in what I'm now calling a "Chuck Rut".

What have you done to me Chuck Hinman? I've reread your article . Large Gardens - A Lost Art? published in Columbia Magazine, March 24, 2013 half a dozen times now.

I swear I'm really not picking on Chuck. It's just that he's really touched my heart here and it's too wet and cold to go out and plant my own "Large Garden".

Chuck's right, most of the big family gardens are gone. In fact most of the big families are gone too. Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone who has a dozen kids anymore.

I think that what we're really talking about here is change. We've all been so busy these days what with walking on the moon, compiling the greatest depository of knowledge man has ever known (the Internet) and pretty much curing every disease known to man that many of us have lost our connection to the earth.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for progress. I am writing this article on a computer and Columbia Magazine is published on the Internet. I believe in remembering the past and dreaming about the future but you need to know that you live in the present.

For me the present is somewhere right in the middle between before and after. The hard part about the present is knowing when to grab hold of it and when to let go. It's how we get "change".

You know what hasn't changed? We all still need to eat. In fact many people have discovered that we still prefer those same homegrown fruits and vegetables that Chuck remembers from his family's garden.

If your present includes a large garden or even a small one we would love to have you join us at the Farmer's Market on the Square in Columbia. This season's market opens Saturday April 20, 2013 at the Court House Annex building parking lot.
