Sustainability: Big Red Bikes receives grant Money will be used to expand fleet for popular program at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green Campus, which now has 65 bicycles. News for Western Kentucky University WKU's Big Red Bikes has received $10,569 from the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeways Commission Paula Nye Memorial Education Grant. The grant is supported with funds generated from the "Share the Road" license places. The grant was written by WKU sophomore Madonna L. May, coordinator of the bike share program. The grant will allow for the second expansion of the campus bike share program. The first expansion also was made possible by a Paula Nye Memorial Education Grant in 2010. The grant will allow purchase of bicycle parts, tools and other equipment needed to expand the fleet. The funds will also be used for educational materials for bicycle awareness and purchase and installation of two self-serve fix-it bike stations on campus, conveniently located near the Bowling Green Greenways paths. The Big Red Bikes bike-lending program is run by WKU students through the Office of Sustainability, and with support from Parking and Transportation Services. The program is growing increasingly popular, with 65 bikes out on loan. Big Red Bikes was student-founded by GreenToppers in 2007. The first Big Red Bike mechanic, alumnus Nick Asher, successfully wrote the first grant proposal in 2010. The program loans refurbished bicycles to students, faculty and staff at WKU at no charge. In 2012 Big Red Bikes and the Office of Sustainability moved to a new location on the WKU Campus. The location at 503 Regents Ave. provides a bigger bicycle shop to support the growth of the program. Big Red Bikes' mechanic Ben Rogers welcomes volunteer help in the bike shop. If you would like to help refurbish bikes for the fleet or have a gently used bike you'd like to donate, contact Big Red Bikes Coordinator Madonna May at madonna.may240@wku.edu For information on Big Red Bikes, or hours of operation, visit: Big Red Bikes Contact: Madonna May, 270-535-0995.
