Evelyn Williams Service, Adair County, KY (1918-2012)

'Mrs. Service moved from Jackson, MS, to Columbia, KY with her daughter in June 2010, where she and Marie shared a home until the morning of her death. She was 93 years old at the time of her death, she lived a good life. She died as she lived, peacefully, and with dignity. Only God knows how much she is missed by her family.'

Evelyn Williams Service passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Westlake Regional Hospital, Columbia, KY.

The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 2pmCT,. at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Randy Copeland officiating. Visitation will be after 10amCT, Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY.



Casket Bearers: David Bowman, Steven Bowman, Michael Wright, Andrew Wright, Ivan Marino, and Andrew Perry.

Honorary: Christian Thomas Wright, Malia Marino and Elizabeth Marie Bowman-Wright.


Evelyn Williams Service, Adair County, KY (1918-2012)


Mrs. Service was the daughter of Andrew and Pearl Williams, born December 6, 1918, in Walnut Grove, Mississippi. She died Sunday, October 21, 2012, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 93 years, 10 months, and 15 days.

She had two older siblings, Andrew Jr. and Elizabeth Williams Wright and a younger brother, Mack Williams, all of whom preceded her in death.

Mrs. Service served as a civilian during World War II in the Med Corp stationed at Camp Shelby, MS, where she met and married her husband, Andrew Leo Service. They fell in love instantly and were married January 24, 1943. They were married 50 years until his death on October 8, 1993.

Three children were born to this marriage: Dr. James W. Service, Dr. Robert W. Service and Marie Service Bowman. Besides her children, she is survived by seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Though being a wife, mother and grandmother was her lifelong ambition and her greatest role, she graduated from Southern Mississippi University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She taught school at Piney Woods School near Hattiesburg, MS, until she left to devote her time to her family. Miss Evelyn, as she was known by her church family, was a charter member of Wildwood Baptist Church in Clinton, MS. She taught Sunday School for 20 years until age 87. She was extremely active in her church and deeply loved by the congregation.
