Barbara Armitage: Turns out, dogs and cats great with languages Studies in Anthropomorphism: A subspecialty of Varmintology. Proven case histories of animals fluent in Italian and English, English and Korean, Russian and Kentuckian, and divers other astounding information By Barbara J. Armitage Oh Ed, dogs and cats are really good with languages. Unlike some people they don't think that they have to be in college to learn something new. I grew up with Lupa, a German Shepherd born and educated in Italy. She was fluent in both Italian and English. Lupa was possibly the most intelligent dog I ever met. Lupa by the way is Latin for "She Wolf" a name that truly described her. I adopted Rinky Dinky, a cat in South Korea in the 1980's. He could often be heard combining English and Korean words. Every time I fed him he would make a little bow and say "meow-hamnida" which translates to thank you. Just two months ago our oldest cat died - Chyornyiy Zeemlyah (Russian for "Black Earth"), "Cho'r-nee" for short. He studied Russian along with our youngest daughter at the University of Kentucky. I think that he would have been a positive influence toward detente had our government asked him to serve. While it is true that you can teach an old dog new tricks, dogs know to teach their pups young to make the pack a stronger place to live. - Barbara J Armitage Comments re article 54014 Amen for Major Barbara from Bro Marshburn This story was posted on 2012-08-25 13:40:57
