By Allison Horseman

Somerset Community College is offering a basic nurse aide course at the SCC Clinton Center this summer. The class, Nursing Assistant Skills I, provides three college credit hours and will be held July 16 through August 2 from 8am to 3pmCT, Monday through Friday.

Class attendees should expect to learn knowledge and skills for nurse aides to assume the role and responsibility required in a long term care setting. The focus of the class is communication, infection control, safety, resident/patient rights and basic nursing skills.

After completing the nurse aide course, participants will be eligible to take the state exam. Successful completion of the state exam allows individuals to work as a nurse aide in nursing facilities such as hospitals, assisted living facilities and physician offices. In addition, the nurse aide course is a requirement for any individuals interested in pursuing the practical nursing (LPN) or the Associate Degree of Nursing (RN) programs at SCC. - Allison Horseman, Somerset Community College
