Matthew Simpson, Casey County, KY (1925-2012)

He retired from the United States Navy as Chief Boatswain's Mate. He spent most of his military life in Europe and in the Pacific. He was in combat in World War II in the Philippines, Okinawa , Iwo Jima, and the Korean War. His last real military action was in Vietnam in 1950 and he also helped evacuate the French Foreign Legion. He earned the American Theatre, Pacific Theatre, Korean Service Medal, Philippines Liberation, United Nation Ribbon, Victory Medal and China Service Medal. He also retired from North Point Training Center in 1986 as Captain and Commander. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Oleika Temple of Lexington.

Matthew "Mack" Simpson of Liberty. KY died Monday May 7, 2012 at the Casey County Hospital, Liberty. He was 86.

Memorial services are 1pmET/12pm noon CT, Tuesday May 29, 2012 at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, 752 Campbellsville Street, Liberty, KY,m with Bro. Phillip Patton and Bro. Donald Mason officiating. Burial is at Mill Springs National Cemetery, 9044 KY 80, Nancy, KY. Visitation is Tuesday 10am-1pmET/9am-12pm noon CT, at the funeral home with Masonic service at 12pm noon ET/1amCT.



Pallbearers: are Ashley Garman, Matthew Cochran, Kay Lucus and Margaret Johnson.

Born June 24, 1925 in Casey County, KY , he was the son of the late Albert and Zuella Leach Baxter. He died Monday May 7, 2012, in Liberty, Casey County, KY, at the age of 86 years, 10 months, and 13 days.

He retired from the United States Navy as Chief Boatswain's Mate. He spent most of his military life in Europe and in the Pacific. He was in combat in World War II in the Philippines, Okinawa , Iwo Jima, and the Korean War. Survivors include the following:
  • His daughter: Danna M. Simpson and Stan Abell of Liberty, KY

  • Two grandchildren: Ashley F. (and Jay) Garman of Waukegan, Illinois and Matthew S. Cochran of Liberty, KY

  • Two great-grandchildren: Liam and Molli

  • And four sisters, Betty (and Lowell) Moore of Hustonville, KY; Patricia (and Elroy) Griffin of McKinney, KY; Faye Mabrey of Princeton, IL and Neva Voiles of Peoria , IL.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Charles "Hoppy" Baxter, Albert Baxter, Jr. and Dallas "Duby" Baxter and two sisters, Lavern Streeval and Dollie Hale.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.Funeral arrangements entrusted to McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with guestbook at www.mckinneybrown.com.
