THE Basketball Game: Lindsey Wilson, 14. Columbia Townies, 5 Sports, By JIM On the afternoon of Thursday, November 28th, 1907, the Columbia basketball team trekked up the Arbor Vitae Hill to take on the lads of Lindsey Wilson. The town boys "expected to eat Lindsey-Wilson up alive" but as Bobbie Burns observed a few centuries ago, "The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft agley," and when the townies left for home, they were wiser if sadder for the experience. Perhaps it was the thin hilltop air, or maybe it was the rarefied atmosphere of academe, but the ball simply wouldn't drop for the Columbia five, and at the end of the first half, the hot-handed Hill quintet had tickled the silk for a 10-3 lead. The Lindseyites cooled off in the second half but the town squad never caught fire, and "when the time keeper announced 'Time up' the score stood 14 to 5 in favor of the boys on the hill." For Lindsey Wilson, Penland scored 8, Jeffries 2, Durham 2, and King 2; for the Columbians, it was Reid 2, Judd 2, Judd 1. SiblingsTom and Romie Judd played for the townies but the newspaper didn't note which brother scored which point(s). The News picked Durham and King over Douglas Penland as the L.W.T.S. stars of the game, although Penland singlehandedly tallied enough points to seal the victory.
