Jesus turns tables, asks What are YOU going to do?

In a prayerful WWJD (What would Jesus do) moment, whining about the country's debt crisis, the message was clear -- from the Whitehouse to my own house -- no more excuses, no more finger pointing, no more buck passing -- and vote to put Congress on commission pay basis with no benefits, no guarantees.

By Linda Waggener

In my spiritual work this Sunday morning, I tried to remember to come into the house of the Lord with thanksgiving. There's so very much to be grateful for, especially the incredible grandchildren I've spent the last week becoming even more enchanted by. After giving thanks for blessings of life, family and community, I found myself whining the popular WWJD question about the country's economic crisis.

Instead of enlightenment about WJ might do, instead of enlightenment about who I might contact to "implore" governmental leaders to get to agreement instead of continuing finger pointing like children who keep saying, "he did it." Instead of that, I heard the reply, "what will YOU do? I gave you a voice. Use your voice."

The message came that J was thinking, as any frustrated parent might over incessant squabbling, "don't make me come down there."

The message seemed to be that if indeed J were to come, He'd stop first at the Whitehouse. He'd appear in front of Congress. He'd say, "my people have sent you here and given you high personal incomes with the freedom to vote yourself regular pay raises, they've allowed you full insurance coverage, vacations and full retirement packages that will cushion you for all the days of your life.

"Now, they are suffering. My people are struggling to make ends meet, people are losing insurance, losing everything because this country is upside down right now -- the few continue to build more wealth while vast numbers are getting poorer. What are YOU going to do right now and every day thereafter to change that?"

In the total silence that J would receive from His leaders who are out of touch with the American people, he would continue, "now it is time for you to be treated the same as every one of the American people who sent you to Washington -- you must have pay and benefit reductions starting August 2, 2011.

"Starting with the very first pay check missed by any serviceman or woman, your salary and benefits package will be reduced by 30 percent since you are incapable of doing the job you were sent here to do. Following that, with the first check missed by any American who is dependent on Social Securtity, your pay and benefits package will be reduced by another 30 percent -- and these reductions are permanent, not temporary. You are to be treated as if your jobs are just like those in any small business -- totally unprotected from guarantees if you can't perform and contribute to the betterment of the company.

"Additionally, you will be fined $5,000 every time you are caught pointing a finger at the opposite party as an explanation for why you are unable to do any better by the American people who sent you into your position of leadership.

"You may keep your jobs, stop being fined and experiencing pay cuts when you have been reduced to the Minimum Wage or when you have gotten agreement from the American people that the country's bank accounts have been saved and tax loopholes adjusted and made fair for all -- as a start."

Just as I was really enjoying the burn Jesus was giving in Washington, He turned and looked directly into my eyes -- scared me half to death -- and said, "What else are YOU going to do Linda Reid?"

Uh-oh.

I always knew as a child that I was in big trouble when my parents and grandparents used that two-name warning, "Don't make me come down there, Linda Reid."

The final message I heard was, "What else are YOU going to do in order to help this country improve for those grandchildren and their grandchildren, what else will YOU do in your own personal budget, in your own community, how will you address your own environmental footprint and improve the legacy you are leaving?"

Personal doorstep sweeping begins now.

Attitude adjustments begin now.

Gratitude soars for the opportunity to serve and improve.
