Takes issue with NYT article Comments re article 45919 Debt Ceiling Link: NYT has detailed Q ATo ColumbiaMagazine.com: As is typical in the NYT their selective use of statistics provides a highly biased view of events when the country desperately needs facts. Yes, Reagan signed bills raising the debt limit, in fact he did so 18 times in his eight year presidency. That is an average of 5.33 months at a time which is an important fact in the current debate. The House wants a six month extension which is closer to the historical norm and the Senate and the President insist on a time frame that will put the next increase out past the November 2012 elections. Only three times in our history has the debt limit been increased for more than one year. The balance of the article is rife with such misdirection but the most egregious in my mind is the selective truncating of the quote from Ronald Reagan regarding default without adding the next sentence which is not only pertinent to the current debate but also points out the folly and danger to the country of continuing to do so. s/John Halsey Knifley, --Jon Halsey This story was posted on 2011-07-31 03:39:40
