Security for President much greater now than even 16 years ago Comments re article 45798. Mayor Harris Dream President presents Dakota Meyer medal in Columbia KY Robert H. Stone writes: I was with a friend in Warm Springs, Georgia, when Clinton and many other big names came to town for the Four Freedom Awards on the Fiftieth Anniversary of Roosevelt's death, 1995. Looking back, it is amazing how little security there was compared with what would happen today. I was probably less than 500 feet from the president and I don't recall being asked any questions by anybody. Robert H. Stone, Lebanon, TNThanks. Your note reminds me of my father telling me of being in Hodgenville, KY, when the President of the United States rode past crowds in an open convertible. "I could have reached over and touch Roosevelt," he said, with the same reverence he would have had for a deity, prounouncing FDR's last name, in the custom of the day "Roo-suh-velt." Now, securityis so tight that Kathy Lee Gifford rides in a gun proof popemobile on a visit to South Park, CO - at least she did in the cartoon episode Evan let me watch this morning on an iPad. -EW This story was posted on 2011-07-25 14:07:16
