Judge Baker used some place names which aren't so familiar today

Comments below about: Cyrus/ An eyewitness account of the Skirmish of July 3rd, 1863, written by Judge Herschel Clay Baker
By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Judge Baker's ( 1841-1934) account of what happened uses some place names that no longer exist from the time he wrote the account. Baker lived in the brick house that is still there and from which he observed the fighting. It is said the doors of the Presbyterian Church, 304 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY (MAP) were used as the "boards" on which to place the wounded.

I checked this out some years ago: The Hindman place was a large house where the Gate Service Station is now (100 Hudson ST, Columbia, KY (MAP) or it may have been where Maxine Walker (100 Block of E. Frazier AV (MAP). lives. Both locations were Hindman houses. Instead of "Stotts" that should be" Stults" and that is where the Dreamland Motel (510 Burkesville ST (MAP) is now located.

The Rosenfield place is where Angel Manor Apartments, 605 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY (MAP) are now and the Cravens house is where Pam Foust lives. Tim Craves was a friend of Morgan and it is written that Morgan stayed in that house on his"Christmas Raid" in 1862.

The "college" mentioned was the M&F School where Adanta, 200 E. Frazier AV, Columbia, KY (MAP) is now located. There was a camp there and the upper floor of the school building offered a view of roadways. There was no school during the (Civil) war.

Captain Jesse Carter who was shot, died in the Page Hotel which was located where the courthouse annex, 424 Public Square (MAP), Columbia, KY, is now. --Vonnie Kolbenschlag
