The Big Al, the Big Rig Trucker story: 1,000,000 Mile Milestone A tribute to one of Adair County's noblest professions, and to one particular practitioner, Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker, who's now driven the equivalent of the circumference of the earth 40.158 times in just seven years! Click on headline for full story with photo(s) By Sheila Owens When we go to the store for food, clothes, or whatever else we might want, we expect those items to be at the store available to buy. Very seldom do we ever consider how an item gets to the store. We don't give a second thought to the truck drivers - male and female - who through hard work and dedication get it there so it is available for us to purchase. There are many men and women in this country who drive over the road bringing the commodities to the local stores for us to buy and use. Many of these truck drivers only get home every 2-3 weeks and sometimes not even that often. If they have families, that's how often they get to see them. It's a lonely occupation with only a CB radio and cell phone the only link they have to another human voice for miles and hours at a time. Truck stops - such as Pilot - are there with kitchen and bathrooms. This is where they eat, shower, and then sleep in their truck - while parked among many more nameless drivers just like themselves. It takes a special breed of person to live this life; day after day, mile after mile. I would like to recognize one such truck driver - Donnie Allen Owens (Big Al - who lives here in Columbia, KY, and who started his driving career July 1, 2004.Today marks the 7th year anniversary of this career for him. When he gets home this weekend he will have driven 1,000,000 miles--through snow, rain, pain and loneliness so that when we go to the store, what we want will be there. I want to thank all the truck drivers for all that they do and I want to congratulate Big Al on reaching that 1,000,000 mile milestone--FYI...this is the equivalent of driving the circumference of the Earth at the equator 40.158 times. Bub and I are proud of you Allen and so are your parents, Ron and Eula Goetz!!! - Sheila Owens This story was posted on 2011-07-01 08:10:38
