The COF writes: Laird is not title of nobility, these days I certainly ain't no Lord, COF protests, from Castle Aery in Kingdom of Knifley Comments re article 43725 The Venerable COF contributes to GWS Lexicon By The COF, chastened and humbler, now Well Sir, ole COF is in a heap of troubles now! Seems as if the headline you attached to my latest post caught the eye of Miz Emily who proceeded to let out a holler that woulda made enny Johnny Reb proud. Appears there might be sum misconfusion regarding the Scots use of the term Laird and the English variety. Appealing to my Erse roots, Laird is the owner of a Landed Estate and in Scotland, a Landed Estate usually refers to "a property that generates income for the owner without the owner having to do the actual work of the estate." Miz Emily says that definement fits me to a t and while Dun Roman definitely has a "Lady of the Manor" I certainly ain't no Lord. In actual fact she had another adjective in front of Lord but this being Sunday and all I thought it best to leave it out. The following definition from the peerage may (or may not) lead to further elucidation: "Laird is not a title of nobility The title does not entitle the owner to sit in the House of Lords and is the Scottish equivalent to an English squire in that it is not a noble title, more a courtesy title meaning landowner with no other rights assigned to it" s/COF resident of Dun Roman (as long as it pleases Miz Emily) This story was posted on 2011-04-17 11:49:49
