Deadline to register to vote in KY primary Mon., April 18, 2011 In seven-county area, register to vote online or at County Clerk's office
From Kentucky Secretary of State's office Frankfort, KY - Kentuckians who wish to vote in the upcoming May 17, 2011 primary election only have a few more days to register to vote. The deadline to register for the upcoming May primary is Monday, April 18, 2011. County Clerks' offices throughout Kentucky will accept voter registration cards until the close of business that day. A postmark of April 18th is also required for all mail-in voter registration applications. Registration cards can be obtained online at State Board of Elections/Register to vote. "I encourage everyone who is not registered to vote or not planning to vote on May 17 to remember those who fought for your right to vote and the people across the world today who are willing to lay down their lives to gain that right and privilege we often take for granted. It is important to register to vote today and over the next month educate yourself about the election," stated Kentucky Secretary of State Elaine Walker. "Make sure your voice is heard by registering to vote today." Minors who are 17 years old but will be 18 years old on or before the general election (November 8, 2011) are eligible to register and entitled to vote in the upcoming primary but are not eligible to vote in special elections unless they are 18 years old. Secretary Walker reminds voters that if they have moved recently, they need to update their voter registration so that they are allowed to vote on election day. In particular, if a voter has moved from one county to another prior to the voter registration books closing and he or she does not update his or her voter registration, that voter will not be allowed to vote in the primary election. Kentucky has closed party primaries, meaning that only voters registered as a Democrat or Republican may vote in their respective primaries. Kentucky law also requires citizens that are already registered to vote and wishing to change their registration from either Democrat or Republican to do so prior to December 31, 2010, to be eligible to vote in that party's May 2011 Primary. If a voter changes his or her political party registration after December 31, 2010, he or she will not be eligible to vote in the party primary of his or her newly chosen party or former party; however, he or she may vote in nonpartisan city and judicial primaries. All eligible and registered voters, regardless of political party registration, may vote in the November 2011 General Election or any special election. If citizens are unsure whether they have registered to vote or uncertain as to where they vote, they can view all of that information online through the Voter Information Center (VIC). VIC will tell voters where they are registered to vote, the location of their polling site, and their political affiliation. It also provides links to elected representatives and driving directions from the voter's home to his or her polling location. VIC can be accessed at KY Voter Information Center .
