Rotary Bean lunch will aid Polio/Plus, community service projects

By George Kolbenschlag

The Columbia Rotary Club once again is providing tax relief Friday April 15 with it's Feed 'em Beans bean soup and cornbread lunch. This low-cost high protein healthy lunch is Rotary's way of keeping Adair County residents well-fed in spite of the tax collectors.

As is the tradition, the lunch will cost just $5 and will be served from 11am-1pmCT at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available from any Rotarian or at the door.

The proceeds will be split between Rotary International's PolioPlus program and local community service projects.

In 1985, Rotary International introduced its Polio-Plus program and joined an effort by World Health Organization and UNICEF to eradicate the disease using enhanced vaccines. Since 1985 the Rotary Foundation with the support of Rotary's more than 31,000 clubs world-wide has contributed more that $900 million toward the program.

In past two years alone Rotarians have contributed more than $141 million towards a $200 million match from the William and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation has shown tremendous confidence in Rotary's PolioPlus program with a total commitment of $330 million.

In 1953 there were 58,000 children and youth who contracted poliomyelitis in the United States. Of those 58,000, more than 3,000 died and 21,000 more suffered life-long mild to debilitating paralysis. The program has been very successful, and polio is considered wide-spread in only four countries-Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nigeria.

However, as long as polio exists it remains a threat to the United States--especially since Polio vaccination is no longer wide-spread in this country.

Contributions to the PolioPlus program may be made at the bean lunch, by mailing to Rotary Columbia-Adair, PO Box 1724, Columbia, KY42728 or with a credit card through through the Rotary International. Send Your donation to Rotary Columbia-Adair, PO Box 1724, Columbia, KY 42728, for you credit card donation.
