U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01), has announced that he is accepting submissions for the annual 'An Artistic Discovery' Congressional Art Competition, from high school artists of the First Congressional District, which includes Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Metcalfe, and Russell Counties in this area.

The Congressional Arts Competition is an annual, nationwide contest sponsored by Members of Congress to showcase the talent of their creative high school constituents. Submissions from winning artists will hang in a part of the Capitol complex known as the Canon Tunnel - a walkway connecting the House office buildings with the U.S. Capitol and Capitol Visitors Center. Members of Congress along with congressional staff and countless visitors travel this corridor daily, enabling the selected artworks to be viewed by a truly nationwide audience.

"Every day as I pass these works of art on my way to the Capitol, I continue to be impressed with the talent that is in our young people," Whitfield said. "It is truly an honor for a student to have their work exhibited in this location and I encourage all interested students from the First District to submit their work for consideration."

The winning entry from the First District will be displayed in the Canon tunnel, while the second and third place entries will be displayed in Congressman Whitfield's Washington, D.C. and Hopkinsville offices, respectively.

Interested students should submit original artwork for judging in the District-wide competition to Congressman Whitfield's Hopkinsville office no later than Friday, April 22, 2011. Artwork must be two-dimensional and each piece can be no larger than 28"x 28" x 4," including the frame. Accepted artwork categories include paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer generated art and photography.
