Frankfort, KY (Jan. 5, 2011) - Annette Dangerfield, a Green County High School junior, is the winner of the "Promote Your School" essay contest, earning herself a $500 scholarship and her school a photo shoot for pictures to be used in college planning materials published by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).

Dangerfield is the daughter of Billy and Lorraine Dangerfield of Greensburg and is a former Rogers Scholar.

Dangerfield's essay about the biggest challenge high school students face was chosen from over 300 entries from 65 schools across the state.

Her essay topic was teens' "belief that the world should cater to their every demand" as the biggest challenge to overcome. Judges said Dangerfield's writing grabbed their attention and made her entry stand out.

In just 200 words, Dangerfield was able to describe how "the pace of society has caused an absence of inspiration" for teens. Judges said her excellent word choice and her insightful delivery set her essay apart from the other entries. Dangerfield's essay excelled in grammar, subject matter and creative imagery and highlighted a universal theme for students across the country, not just in Kentucky.

"A teenager has just realized that the 21st-century world of high-tech instant gratification gadgets may hurt, not help, today's youth. It's a refreshing essay," said one judge.

Dangerfield received an award on Dec. 17, 2010, at Green County High School. Dr. Carl Rollins, senior marketing manager for KHEAA, also presented a plaque to Principal Karen Marcum, honoring the school as the Kentucky 2011 model school.

Dangerfield and other Green County students will participate in a photo shoot at the school in January. The pictures will be used in free college planning guides for high school students, posters, brochures and other KHEAA publications. KHEAA is the state agency that administers grants, Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES), work-study and savings programs.
