Columbia Rotary Club president, George Kolbenschlag accepted the Rotary International Ray Klingsmith banner from Woody Northup, Louisville, District Governor last night at the Columbia Rotary's Monday night meeting, August 2, 2010, at Brown's Restaurant in Garlin, KY.



Northup and Assistant District Governor, Joe Walters, Campbellsville, were guests of Columbia Rotary Club. While complimenting Columbia's Rotary Club for its local efforts, he also stressed the importance of continued support of international efforts such as the eradication of Polio in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children. Rotary Clubs are raising $200 million to match the $355 million in challenge grants made by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations.

Rotary International is an organization of service clubs known as Rotary Clubs located all over the world with 33,976 local clubs for a worldwide membership of 1.22 million. Rotary's motto is "Service above Self."

Local projects include water testing of creeks and streams in conjunction with Green River Watershed, scholarships to Lindsey Wilson College for local graduates, literacy programs with Adair County Public Library, and other projects in partnership with local and regional organizations and programs.

The Columbia Rotary Club meets weekly on Monday evenings at 6pmCT at Lindsey Wilson College Cramner Dining Hall, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Columbia, KY. For information on how you can become part of this exciting organization, we encourage you to attend any meeting. -Ellen Zornes
