Sheriff Ralph Curry warns of blacktopping scam

Adair County Sheriff Ralph Curry warns Adair County residents to be wary of some itinerant blacktopping sales people who seem to be preying on elderly Adair County, homeowners.

"They show up with a load of blacktop, offer to blacktop a drive on the spot. They get paid in advance," he said, "And they do spread some blacktop, but the work if of poor quality."

He said that a job done for an 81 year old woman in the Southern part of Adair County, for $4,500, would likely need to be taken up. "It was so rough," Sheriff Curry said. "I was told that the best thing the homeowner could do would be to have it taken up."He said he had heard of one other similar case. "The strange thing is that they did one job and then came back into the area to do another, on another day."The check for the work was cashed in Cumberland County, Sheriff Curry said. "The receipt given the elderly woman had the address of the pavers torn off," he said. The Sheriff advised residents to call 911 for the State Police or the Sheriff's office if they are approached by travelling home repair or blacktop sales people.
