Obituary: Austin Karnes, 86, Adair Co., KY

He was the head of a large, respected Adair Co., KY family. He was a highly regarded automobile mechanic whose career spanned 67 years. He attended the Sparksville Church of the Nazarene.

Austin Karnes age 86, of Lee Street, Columbia, KY passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 10:35amCT, at his home after several months illness.

The funeral service will Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 1pmCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Lonny Karnes and Bro. Daryl Karnes the officiating clergy. Interment in the Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 2pmCT, Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the funeral home.



Pallbearers will be Timmy Ballou, Matthew Burton, Jeremy Conner, Brad Johnson, TImmy Mullins, and Jacob Voris. Honorary pallbearers will be Lonnie Grant, Timmy Montgomery, Jim Moss, Ronnie Slaven and Ronnie Stone.

Austin Karnes, 86, Columbia, KY

He was the son of the late Allen and Pearl Butler Karnes of Adair Co., KY. He was born Wednesday, January 2, 1924, in Adair Co., KY, and died Thursday, March 25, 2010, in Columbia, Adair Co., KY at the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 23 days.

He was preceded in death by one brother Jimmy Karnes and a granddaughter Bridgett Karnes.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Karnes of Columbia, KY, and the following:
  • Two sons: Wayne Karnes and wife Jane of Gainsville, GA; Justin Karnes and friend Tralisa of Columbia, KY

  • Four daughters: Tonya Ballou of Columbia & husband Tim of Georgetown, KY; Bonnie Johnson of Elizabethtown, KY; Peggy Moore and husband: Bruce of Louisville, KY; Imogene McCloud and husband Dale of Columbia, KY

  • Three step children: Elizabeth Spears and husband Larry of Burkesville, KY; Donna Voris and husband Victor of Burkesville, KY; Eddie Grissom and wife Donna of Elizabethtown, KY

  • Five brothers: William Karnes and wife Norma Jo of Greensburg, KY; Randall Karnes and wife Sue of Columbia, KY; Lonny Karnes and wife Edna of Columbia, KY; Ronnie Karnes and wife Connie of Columbia, KY; and Daryl Karnes and wife Wanda of Columbia, KY

  • Three sisters: Geraldine Herbst of Mt. Sterling, KY; Dorothy Mouser and husband Harold of Columbia, KY; Barbara Booher of Columbia, KY

  • Twenty-one grandchildren and step grandchildren

  • Eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends survive
Mr. Karnes was an automobile mechanic for 67 years and attended the Sparksville Church of the Nazarene.
