The Second Sunday project, held this year on Sunday, October 11, 2009, at the Adair County Extension Office at 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY, drew 150 registrants, up from 130 in 2008, when the same event was held at the Adair County Elementary School. It was an increase of over 15%.

"It's really catching on," Kelli Bonifer, an Adair County Extension Agent and an organizer for the benefit, said. She said that in 2008, 70 counties participated; this year, 105 of Kentucky's 120 counties had Second Events.

Bicycle safety was stressed with an obstacle course set up on the new Lindsey Wilson parking lot bounded by Fairground and Young Streets, and Spickard Drive. Doug Beckhart, conducted the course as a representative of the Kosair Hospital Foundation. He came at the invitation of Paula Garrison of the Adair County Family Resource Center.

For the 3-5pmCT period, Fairground ST from Wain to Young Street was blocked off for walkers and bikers.

The Second Sunday committee includes Jelaine Harlow, Kelli Bonifer, Paula Garrison, Debbie Cowan, Ellen Zornes, Greg Thomas, Terry Partin, Terry Akin, and Lee Ann Jessee. This committee is focused on one event, Second Sunday.

Another committee, with many of the same members, the Adair County Community Physical Activity Committee, works on a broader program of physical fitness. It includes Rhonda Akin, Phyllis Thompson, LeeAnn Jessee, Debbie Cowan, Ellen Zornes, Destiny Burton, Kelli Bonifer, and Jelaine Harlow.

The largest group participating this year was again the walkers from Jones Chapel United Methodist Church.

Adair County Judge Ann Melton came as a participant.
