Obituary: Martha Edith Compton, 92, Greensburg, KY

Mrs. Compton was a member of a respected Green County family. She was a member of Victory General Baptist Church and was retired from the Louisville School system after a career as a nurse's aide

Mrs. Martha Edith Compton of Greensburg, KY, daughter of the late Lonnie E. Atwell and Evie Lee Thompson Atwell, was born on November 24, 1916 in Buffalo, IL and departed this life on Monday, March 2, 2009 at the Jane Todd Crawford Hospital in Greensburg, Kentucky. She was 92 years, three months and six days of age.

The funeral services for Mrs. Martha Edith Compton will be conducted at 10:00amCT, Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home, Greensburg, KY, with burial to follow in the Resthaven Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Bro. Garnett W. Tucker will be officiating.



She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Victory General Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. She was also retired from the Louisville School System where she worked as a Nurses Aide.

She united in marriage to Ellis J. Compton on August 5, 1934 who preceded her in death on May 14, 1983.

Survivors include the following:
  • Two sons and daughters-in-law: Wayne and Judy Compton of Greensburg, KY; and Donnie and Ellen Compton of W. Liberty, KY

  • A brother: Claudie Atwell, Louisville, KY

  • Two sisters: Maydean Curry, Campbellsville, KY; and Sybil Webster, Louisville, KY

  • Four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Compton was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters: Glen Atwell, Joe Atwell, Leon Atwell, Thurman Atwell, Harlan Atwell, Mildred Patterson, Delsie Hinton and Maudie Whitlock.

Pallbearers: Wayne Compton, Jr., Tim Coffey, Josh Coffey, Chad Hilton, Chuck Hilton, Brad Craig, and Calvin Craig.
