Sam was employed by IMO Industries for 33 years as a senior engineer. In his memory, and made a lasting impression on his colleagues there. The flag will fly at half staff in front of the plant during the month of January. The employees at IMO issued the following statement: He gave countless hours to Adair County Youth Sports Programs He was a longtime baseball umpire for Adair County High School and Adair County Little League and umpired in surrounding counties, he was also an assistant coach for the Adair County Football Program and volunteered countless hours to Adair County Youth Sports Programs. "I didn't know what he did for a living or where he came from, just that it must have been somewhere in Tennesee. All I ever heard Sam talk about was football," David Herbst of the Columbia Parks & Recreation Board said on hearing of Bivens' death tonight. He showed deep loyalty. Even if for the wrong cause. He was a Tennessee Vol fan, and made sure everybody knew it. "He took a lot of ribbing here because he always flaunted his University of Tennessee orange, but here in Wildcat Country, he was loved just the same, maybe all the more, for his loyalty," Herbst said. "He was rarely seen without wearing some Big Orange, sometimes he was covered in it," Herbst said. "Once he appeared not to have any, and he was kidded about it. 'Oh yes,' Sam said. 'I've got Orange.' We were afraid he had an undergarment with Tennessee on it. But he reached in his pocket and pulled out his cell phone, with a UT Volunteer cover painted on it. And everybody laughed. We were never able to catch him with something Tennessee." He was the kind of person one only had to meet once to remember. He had an easy going way. He had a way of making everyone he met happier for having known him. He came from Jefferson City, Tennessee. But here, in Columbia, Kentucky, he will always be remembered as one of us, a true and beloved, through and through, Adair Countian. He was a good man, whose presence will be sorely missed.
