Obituary: Richard Blair, M.D., 72, retired Westlake psychiatrist

Dr. Blair was a distinguished physician, and member of prominent Adair County family

Richard A. Blair M.D. age 72 years, of 150 Garden Lane, Columbia, KY, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2006, at the Greenview Regional Hospital in BowlingGreen, Kentucky after a long illness.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at 10:00am CT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with Father Dan Lincoln the clergy officiating.



He was the son of the late Dr. Earl and Nellie Walling Blair of Adair County, KY.

Dr. Blair practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for five years in Paducah, Kentucky and five years in Louisville, KY, and later practiced Psychiatric medicine for 10 years as Director of Psychiatric Services at Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia, KY.

Dr. Blair was the Chairman of the Gynecology residency training program at the University of Tennessee at Memphis School of Medicine. He was a faculty member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the University of Louisville College of Medicine and the University of Arkansas.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Columbia, KY.He attained the rank of Captain in the US Army.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Delwin Kellerman Blair, Columbia, KY, and the following:
  • One son, Lt. Col. Richard Earl Blair. a flight surgeon with the US Air Force, currently stationed in South Korea

  • Three daughters: Rebecca Blair O'Brien, Birmingham, AL; Delwin Jacoby of Lawrenceburg, KY; Nancy Blair, Palm Springs, CA

  • Twelve grandchildren survive, as well as several local cousins including James C. Blair of Columbia, KY; and Bill Blair of Birmingham, AL
The family has chosen cremation with interment of the cremains in the Columbia Cemetery.

The family request visitation from 5:00pm until 8:00pm, CT on Monday, November 20, 2006, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Public Square, Columbia, KY.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lindsey Wilson College Scholarship Fund, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY 42728.
