Kentucky Color: Into the forest we should go Comments re: Words of Wisdom for April 30, 2026 By Billy Joe Fudge I so much appreciate each and every one of Miss Donna Rieder's "Words of Wisdom" on CM. Of course, this particular quote from Mariah Danu struck a chord with me, since I have spent most of my adult life in the forest. I also was blessed to share many trips into the forest with others as well. In this wild and crazy world we find ourselves today, "concrete, steel and the screen" corrupts most every visage of the natural world which sustains us and robs our hearts of the awareness of our integral connection to it. Because each message that our senses of hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste feed into our minds is corrupted by that which I call the "ills of urbanization", about the only ecoystem that can sufficiently block those "ills" to allow the realities of nature and creation to enter the annals of our minds and hearts, is the forest. I have taken thousands on trail walks through the woods during my 30 year career at the Kentucky Division of Forestry, and nearly 25 years volunteering at Homeplace on Green River. Each trip through the forest with students and their teachers, most of whom had never set foot in the glorious wooded ecosystem beyond their backyards or cooled by spring-fed streams on a hot and muggy day proved both rewarding and discouraging. It was so rewarding to see the joy of most of the children and their teacher in finding this place of peace, comfort and uncorrupted sensory stimulation and discouraging in that I was reminded that 99.99 percent of children and my fellowmen will not be able to experience this same joy. Our culture, our educational apparatus, our politicians and all of us continually lament the loss of our humanity, our self-awareness and sense of decency. I submit to you that it is indeed a problem with our "souls" and that our lives would be significantly improved if only, "into the forest we would go!" This story was posted on 2026-05-02 16:00:41
